HP profit beats expectations on PC sales

PALO ALTO, Calif. — Hewlett-Packard said today its fiscal second-quarter profit rose as revenue climbed in its personal systems group, which includes PCs.
HP, which pre-announced earnings last week, earned $2.06 billion, or 80 cents a share, compared with $1.78 billion, or 65 cents a share, in the year-ago quarter.
On an adjusted basis, HP earned 87 cents a share.
The computer maker and technology services provider's revenue rose to $28.3 billion from $25.5 billion.
Analysts polled by Thomson Financial expected adjusted earnings of 85 cents a share on $28.11 billion in revenue.
HP expects third-quarter earnings of 82 cents to 83 cents a share on revenue of $27.3 billion to $27.4 billion.
HP reiterated its fiscal 2008 revenue forecast of $114.2 billion to $114.4 billion.
Shares of HP were off 26 cents in after-hours trading today after falling 25 cents to $46.46 in the regular trading session.
