Danish biotech firm agrees to buy Icos plant in Bothell

CMC Biopharmaceuticals of Copenhagen said late Monday it has agreed to buy the former Icos biotechnology manufacturing facility in Bothell from Eli Lilly and Co. for an undisclosed amount.

The Danish company said it will keep the plant?s 127 employees and will invest to expand the Bothell operation?s capabilities in producing therapeutic proteins.

The plant will be the first U.S. presence for CMC, a provider of contract biotech development and manufacturing services.

Icos, developer of the erectile dysfunction drug Cialis, was acquired in January 2007 by Lilly, which laid off all Icos employees except those working at the manufacturing plant.

The plant has been used to make protein-based drugs in small quantities for early-stage clinical trials. CMC said it aims to produce the larger quantities needed for late-stage trials and commercial production.
