Reporters Sharon Pian Chan and David Heath interviewed former and current InfoSpace employees, their associates, investors, experts in accounting and securities law, regulatory officials and other experts — more than 100 people in all. The Seattle Times and its lawyers successfully unsealed court records in four different lawsuits in state and federal courts.
The series also relied on nearly 8,000 pages of InfoSpace documents, including e-mail, voice mail, correspondence, notes from interviews of executives and board members by their lawyers, financial projections, board minutes, details of stock trading by insiders, and other records.
The reporters also obtained correspondence between the Securities and Exchange Commission and Naveen Jain's lawyer under the federal Freedom of Information Act. Using New York public records laws, they obtained several thousand pages of materials from the office of New York Attorney General Elliot Spitzer, who has investigated investment banks, mutual funds and public companies for securities-law violations.
