Feeding time

The key advantage of RSS is it allows you to create your own collection of news sites to subscribe to. Here's how I added one news feed — from Wired News — to the aggregator I use, NetNewsWire:

1. On the Wired News home page, www.wired.com/news/, I look for an RSS link. There it is, at the bottom.

2. I click the link, which takes me to www.wired.com/news/rss, a page listing all of Wired News' RSS feeds.

3. To subscribe to Gadgets and Gizmos, I right-click (on a Windows PC) or Control-click (on a Mac) on that link, and select Copy URL to Clipboard.

4. I switch from my browser to the NetNewsWire program and choose Subscribe from the Subscriptions menu.

5. I paste in the link and click OK.

6. NetNewsWire immediately gathers the current headlines and lists the titles in its main window. It now becomes part of my regular diet of sites I scan online.
