Snapshot of 2011 housing market

After more than two years of on-again, off-again federal tax credits, the housing market in 2011 had two things going for it — historic low mortgage rates and lots of inventory — which enticed some buyers back into the market. As for prices, well, let's just say they are higher than they were a decade ago.

<strong>In Person: </strong>After years of living in the mountains of northern Nicaragua as an agricultural aid worker trying to make life better for the country's poor farmers, Paul Rice woke up and smelled the coffee — specifically, fair-trade coffee. That was 12 years ago. Today, Rice heads Fair Trade USA, an Oakland-based nonprofit that is the country's leading certifier of fair-trade products.
