"Fort Lawton" by Jack W. Jaunal (Arcadia, $19.99). A photo-history of the infantry post perched above Magnolia Bluffs, from its opening in 1901 to its scheduled closing in 2009. Jaunal teaches American history at Pierce College in Lakewood.
"Heart in the Studio" by Jake Brown (ECW Press, $19.95). An album-by- album survey of the career of the Seattle-based rock band led by sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson.
"U.S. Air Force Survival Handbook" by Department of the Air Force (Skyhorse, $14.95). A survival manual on coping with dangers on land, at sea, in mountainous terrain and under Arctic conditions. The U.S. Air Force Survival School is at Fairchild Air Force Base near Spokane.
"Hell Hawks! The Untold Story of the American Fliers Who Savaged Hitler's Wehrmacht" by Robert E. Dorr and Thomas D. Jones (Zenith, $24.95). A history of fighter-bomber pilots who supported Eisenhower's ground forces across France and Germany during World War II. Seattle resident and Hell Hawk veteran Donald E. Hillman figures prominently in the book.
"Lottery" by Patricia Wood (Berkley, $14). Paperback edition of an Everett-set novel, about a slow-witted marine-supply worker who runs afoul of his family after he wins $12 million in the Washington State Lottery. The drama is sometimes heavy-handed, but the narrator, with his unusual take on the world, is winning.
"Prime: Adventures and Advice on Sex, Love, and the Sensual Years" by Dr. Pepper Schwartz (Collins, $15.95). Paperback edition of the University of Washington sociology professor's account of her experiences looking for love, sex and relationships in her 50s.
"Mary Cassatt: Impressionist Painter" by Lois V. Harris (Pelican, $15.95). A book for young children about the great American painter, illustrated with reproductions of paintings by Cassatt and her contemporaries. Harris lives in Anacortes.
