Local books: fantasy novels, a Puget Sound naval history and Sherman Alexie's latest in paperback
A vampire-haunted Seattle provides the setting for Kat Richardon's latest Greywalker novel, which tops this week's list of books of local interest.
New releases
"Labyrinth" by Kat Richardson (Roc, $24.95). In the Seattle author's latest Greywalker novel, set in a limbo "between the living room and the paranormal realm," heroine Harper Blaine — after being dead for 2 minutes — tries to find out who "killed" her. Richardson reads at 7 p.m. Tuesday, University Book Store, 4326 University Way N.E., Seattle, free (206-634-3400 or www.ubookstore.com), and autographs books at noon Wednesday, Seattle Mystery Bookshop, 117 Cherry St., Seattle, free (206-587-5737 or www.seattlemystery.com).
"Mozart's Blood" by Louise Marley (Kensington, $15). Seattle-area writer-musician Marley's new book is about a youthful "ethereal singer" who's actually centuries old and "once 'shared the tooth' with Mozart himself." Marley reads with Kay Kenyon ("Prince of Storms") at 7 p.m. Wednesday, University Book Store, 4326 University Way N.E., Seattle; free (206-634-3400 or www.ubookstore.com).
"The Navy in Puget Sound" by Cory Graff and the Puget Sound Navy Museum (Arcadia, $21.99). Photo-history covering the U.S. Navy presence in Puget Sound, starting with the United States Exploring Expedition of 1841.
"Discovering Your Amazing Marriage" by Jason and Debby Coleman (Seraphina Press, $14.95). Two Federal Way authors "share some of the secrets they found to help reignite the romance, respect and love in their relationship." The Colemans autograph their book at 2-4 p.m. Saturday, Borders Southcenter, 2437 Southcenter Mall, Tukwila, free (206-575-4506 or www.borders.com).
"Between the Two Rivers: A Story of the Armenian Genocide" by Aida Kouyoumjian (Coffeetown Press, $19.95). A Bellevue College teacher's book about her mother and aunt who, as young girls, survived the persecutions of the Ottoman Empire during World War I.
"War Dances" by Sherman Alexie (Grove, $14). New in paperback: the prizewinning Seattle writer's 2009 collection of stories and poems. Times book editor Mary Ann Gwinn wrote: "Alexie mixes up comedy and tragedy, shoots it through with tenderness, then delivers with a provocateur's don't-give-a-damn flourish."
"Rusty the Robot's Holiday Adventure" by Sherry Decker and Michael McCarty (Sam's Dot Publishing, $7). Tales for readers ages 8-12 about an abandoned robot living in a "Forbidden Zone" near a futuristic city. Co- author Decker lives near Seattle.
