Washington state's Gov. Booth Gardner is subject of new biography

New releases

"Booth Who? A Biography of Booth Gardner" by John C. Hughes (Washington State Heritage Center Legacy Project, $25). A look at the life of our 19th governor (1985-1993). Gardner was also the leader of the 2008 "Death with Dignity" campaign in Washington state.

"Boom Town Boy: Coming of Age on Alaska's Lost Frontier" by Jack de Yonge (Epicenter, $14.95). A former writer with The Seattle Times and Seattle Post-Intelligencer, now living in Concrete, recalls his boyhood in Fairbanks, Alaska.

"The Tooth That Nibbles at the Soul: Essays on Music and Poetry" by Marshall Brown (University of Washington Press, $75 hardcover, $35 paperback). A University of Washington professor of comparative literature and the editor of Modern Language Quarterly examines "the development of literature, music and the arts from the eighteenth century to the avant-garde movements of the early twentieth."

"Mommy, Are We French Yet? Tales of an American Family Living in France" by Shawn Underwood (Five Star, $14.95). A Seattle-area writer recounts her family's bumpy year abroad in the south of France.

"Occultations" by David Wolach (Black Radish Books, $15). Experimental "textual/visual palimpsests" from a professor of text arts, poetics and aesthetics at The Evergreen State College.

"Onaedo: The Blacksmith's Daughter" by Ngozi Achebe (Mandac-Goldberg, $19.95). An Olympia author's novel about two women living in eras 400 years apart: a contemporary American of part- African ancestry and an African of the 16th century.

"10 Steps to Successful Social Networking for Business" by Darin Hartley (ASTD Press, $19.95). A Poulsbo author's tips on how to make social networking work for you professionally.

"Lightfall: This Is Our Apocalypse" by Christian Carvajal (Fear Nought, $21.95). A teacher of mathematics at Olympic College in Bremerton and Shelton, Mason County, writes "a secular, satirical thrill ride, in which all humanity's glories and vanities can be seen in one lyrical, hypocritical microcosm."

"The Everything Guide to Starting and Running a Nonprofit" by Jim Goettler (Adams Media, $19.95). A Suquamish, Kitsap County, nonprofit consultant, community organizer and political activist outlines the "careful planning, realistic goals and sustainable financing" that any viable nonprofit needs.
