Local offerings | "Rough Guides" follow careers of Nirvana, Jimi Hendrix

Music writer Gillian G. Gaar's "Rough Guide to Nirvana" and Yasmine Galenorn's latest "Otherworld" paranormal romance are among the books of local interest this week.

"The Rough Guide to Nirvana" by Gillian G. Gaar and "The Rough Guide to Jimi Hendrix" by Richie Unterberger (Rough Guides/Penguin, both $18.99). Two "guides" to the lives and careers of local rock legends, including detailed discographies. Gaar, who lives in Seattle, has book parties planned 7 p.m. today, Bailey/Coy, 414 Broadway E., Seattle, free (206-323-8842 or www.baileycoybooks.com) and 7 p.m. Thursday, Feedback Lounge, 6451 California Ave. S.W., Seattle (with Nirvana music and video), 21-and-over only, free (206-453-3259 or www.feedbacklounge.net).

"Demon Mistress" by Yasmine Galenorn (Berkley, $7.99). The sixth novel in the Bellevue author's paranormal romance series, "Otherworld," features "three sexy, semi-supernatural sisters," plus a ghoul, a necromancer and a missing bartender.

"Crime Signals: How to Spot a Criminal Before You Become a Victim" by David Givens (St. Martin's, $13.95). Tips from a Spokane writer.

"How Women Got Their Curves and Other Just-So Stories" by David P. Barash and Judith Eve Lipton (Columbia University Press, $29.95). Barash, an evolutionary biologist and professor of psychology at the University of Washington, collaborates with his wife, a clinical psychiatrist at Swedish Medical Center, in investigating the "evolutionary enigmas" of ovulation, menopause and other physiological traits of female humans that aren't found in other species.

"During My Nervous Breakdown I Want to Have a Biographer Present" by Brandon Scott Gorrell (Muumuu House, $12, www.muumuuhouse.com). A young Seattle writer's debut collection of poems, covering such topics as "face annihilation," "gigantic mountains" and "the cellphone and the Internet" (all poem titles).

"The Dumb Bunnies Go to the Zoo" by Dav Pilkey (Blue Sky/Scholastic, $16.99). A Seattle-area writer-illustrator's picture book for children ages 4-8 about a family of clueless rabbits wreaking havoc wherever they go.
