A Portland author retraces the route of George Vancouver's 1792 exploratory journey from Puget Sound through the Strait of Georgia up to Queen Charlotte Strait. "You Are a Dog: Life Through the Eyes of Man's Best Friend" by Terry Bain (Harmony, $16). A humorous take on canine life, by a Spokane writer also known (he says) as "He Who Leaves the Seat Up So That You Might Drink." "Ghosts Among Us: True Stories of Spirit Encounters" by Leslie Rule (Andrews McMeel, $14.95). The Seattle writer ("Coast to Coast Ghosts") continues her investigations into the paranormal. With an introduction by the author's mother, Ann Rule. "A Stain Upon the Sea: West Coast Salmon Farming" by Stephen Hume, Alexandra Morton, Betty C. Keller, Rosella M. Leslie, Otto Langer and Don Staniford (Harbour, $26.95). A critique of fish-farming practices in British Columbia and elsewhere. With a preface by David T. Suzuki and introduction by Terry Glavin. "Best Desert Hikes: Washington" by Alan L. Bauer and Dan A. Nelson (Mountaineers, $16.95). One hundred suggestions on where to go for a walk on the dry side. Bauer lives in Fall City; Nelson lives in Puyallup. "Walnut Heart" by Donna Frisk (Finishing Line Press, $14 or $16 including shipping,, www.hometown.aol.com/finishingl/index.html). A chapbook of verse by a Des Moines poet and teacher. "Robins Facing South" by J. Andrew Rodriguez (Red Mountain Press, $12). Poems by a Seattle writer-lawyer, a former director of the Washington State Commission on Hispanic Affairs. "The Last Page" by Brian Palmer (PublishAmerica, $19.95). Novel about awkward romance between a troubled barista and an unemployed college graduate. By a Tacoma writer. "Opal: A Life of Enchantment, Mystery, and Madness" by Kathrine Beck (Penguin, $16). Paperback reprint of the Seattle writer's biography of the Oregon woman who, early in the 20th century, made a big splash with the publication of her (possibly bogus) mystical childhood diary. Times reviewer Barbara Lloyd McMichael wrote, "Despite [Beck's] assiduous research skills, her reportorial tenacity hits a brick wall when it comes to getting answers from key surviving figures in this real-life drama."
"A Bird of Passage: The Story of My Life"
by Otto Lang (Pictorial Histories Publishing, $19.95). New edition of the ski-instructor-turned-Hollywood-producer's 1994 memoir. Lang ("Five Fingers") lives in West Seattle.
