FedEx orders 4 Boeing 777 freighter jets
Boeing revealed on its order website Thursday that it was FedEx that ordered four 777 freighter jets last month.
Boeing revealed on its order website Thursday that it was FedEx that ordered four 777 freighter jets last month.
The order is worth just over $1 billion at list prices. Assuming typical discounts, based on data from aircraft valuation firm Avitas, the actual purchase price is about $650 million.
FedEx is the largest operator of the 777F, with 12 already in service and 17 more on order.
In addition, FedEx had made a separate order for 15 of the jets conditional on Congress not changing the law governing its union relations. That political move is now dead, and a Boeing spokesman said Thursday that "we strongly feel that (the order for 15 more) will be firmed up in due time."
This story was originally published March 24, 2011, and corrected March 28, 2011. The story originally said FedEx already has 10 777F airplanes in service; it actually has 12 in service.
