Boeing hands out another 100 layoff notices locally

Seattle Times aerospace reporter
Boeing today will issue about 300 layoff notices companywide, about a third of those to employees in the Commercial Airplanes division.
About 100 employees in the Puget Sound region will get a layoff notice.
Boeing has announced layoffs each month since January, when chief executive Jim McNerney said Boeing would cut 10,000 jobs companywide this year through attrition and layoffs. Of that total, 4,500 will come from the Commercial Airplanes unit. The impact in Washington is expected to exceed 5,000 job cuts.
As of the end of April, Boeing had cut just over 2,100 jobs in the state this year. It also left unfilled a further 1,000 Commercial Airplanes positions, which the company is counting towards its overall job-cut goal.
The next wave of actual layoffs comes on Memorial Day. Boeing extended the deadline from Friday, so that those losing their jobs will get paid for the holiday. More than 700 local employees were given that layoff date back in March.
But not all of those workers will end up losing their jobs. Some have found new positions within Boeing. Some have had their jobs saved by other employees leaving.
Of those who received the notices in March, 458 were local Machinist union members. But Boeing has told union officials that no more than 251 of those, and possibly fewer, will actually be laid off Monday.
