Bellevue chess club is tops again in chess tourney
Posted by Katherine Long
Bellevue's Stevenson Elementary School chess team has once again hauled away an impressive pile of trophies from the National Elementary School Chess Championship, held earlier this month in Atlanta.
Where to begin? The school fielded four teams, and all of them came back with top placements: the K-3 unrated, K-3 U800 and K-5 U900 all placed first, and the K-5 team placed second in the open championship section -- missing first place by just one point.
A few standouts: In the K-3 unrated division, Gabriel Shen scored a perfect 7 out of 7 points to win individual 1st place, Timmy Wang won an individual 2nd place and Richard Yang an individual 9th place.
In the K-3 division, Derek Zhang scored a perfect 7.0 to win individual 1st place, Terrance Li won an individual 6th place and Colin Tang won an individual 7th place. On the K-5 U900 team, Nathan Shao won an individual 5th place, Tudor Muntianu an individual 6th place and Benjamin Cheung an individual 7th place.
The K-5 championship team's individual winners included Mayhul Arora, who won an individual 2nd place, and Patrick Wang, who won an individual 10th place.
In the K-6 unrated section, Brian Zhu was the individual 1st place winner.
This year's team was led by coaches Elliott Neff, David Hendricks, John Graves and Michael Hosford. The club is in its 8th full year as an after-school club activity, and has 76 members from K through 5th grades. It's run by parent volunteers.
