Bellevue sheep-shearing Saturday
Posted by Katherine Long
Bellevue gives a nod to its farming roots this weekend when it holds the annual sheep-shearing celebration at Kelsey Creek Park on Saturday. Professional shearers will be on stage to shear the farm's sheep of their winter coats.
The event originated in the early 1990s, when a crowd would gather each spring to watch the sheep being shorn.
Shearer Doug Davies will explain the shearing process and tell some stories, and Kelsey Creek Farm staffer Tamar White will explain how wool is changed from fleece to sweater. Two other shearers will be on hand to trim wool from the sheep: Amy Wolfe, a judge in the 4-H and sheep community; and Al Schweider, a local shearer.
The event will be from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the park, 410 130th Place S.E. Activities will include spinning demonstrations, children's crafts, tractor-pulled wagon rides, pony rides, dog herding demonstrations, heritage displays and food.
Admission is free, but the costs vary between $1 and $3 for some activities.
