Cameras started tracking red-light runners on 148th today
Posted by Nicole Tsong
Since October, cameras already have caught hundreds of drivers speeding in front of two Bellevue elementary schools. The city of Bellevue ramped up its camera program today with the installation of cameras at two intersections on busy 148th Avenue Northeast aimed at catching drivers who run red lights.
Starting today, the city is sending warnings to red-light runners at the intersections of 148th and Bel-Red Road and at 148th and Main Street. The cameras are tracking north and southbound traffic on 148th at the Bel-Red intersection, and just southbound drivers at the Main Street intersection, said Bellevue Police spokeswoman Carla Iafrate.
On Feb. 2, any drivers caught running a red light will receive a citation and be fined $124, Iafrate said.
The city is considering adding red-light cameras to four more intersections, but the exact locations have not been decided, she said.
Last year, the City Council approved the use of traffic cameras on a trial basis. Cameras have been registering speeding drivers at Stevenson and Lake Hills elementary schools since September. In October, the first month the city gave out citations, 1,088 drivers were fined, Iafrate said. Another 902 drivers were fined in November.
All drivers receive the same $124 fine no matter how fast they are going, Iafrate said. The revenue from the citations goes to the public safety program for the red light cameras.
