Taking a headcount: cycling and walking in Bellevue
Posted by Nicole Tsong
Spotting cyclists on the road in Bellevue is still more a surprising sight than the norm.
But they exist. And the city of Bellevue spent some time this year tracking cyclists and pedestrians, releasing new statistics that give a more accurate picture of how many are on the roads.
In the second count of its kind for Bellevue, city staff tracked pedestrians and cyclists using traffic cameras and volunteer interviewers. They counted 758 pedestrians from 4-6 p.m. on a Tuesday in September at four intersections leading in and out of downtown. They counted 367 cyclists at 13 places throughout the city, including bike trails.
Volunteers also talked to pedestrians and cyclists at 108th Avenue Northeast and Northeast Fourth Street and learned a majority were commuting to work, the city said. The median distance for people on foot was a mile, while the median for bicyclists was nine miles, including transit portions.
Cyclists asked for more bike lanes and pedestrians wanted shorter waits at crosswalks, the city said.
The city has made a push to make its streets more accessible and the City Council earlier this year passed a bike and pedestrian plan that called for building 80 miles of bike lanes, 90 miles of sidewalks and 20 miles of trail improvements. It also installed two dozen bike racks this summer, and has plans for three new crosswalks that will be placed in the middle of blocks to make walking downtown easier.
Do you bike or walk to work in downtown Bellevue? What are your concerns?
