Coca-Cola Enterprises CEO pushes recycling in Bellevue
Posted by Katherine Long
The Coca-Cola bottling plant in Bellevue is where most of the Coca-Cola sold in Washington state is produced and bottled. On Thursday, it will also be the location for a world-wide, live streaming broadcast to Coca-Cola Enterprise's 72,000 employees about the importance of sustainability.
Soft drinks don't usually enjoy much of a green reputation, but the company has found going green to be good for the corporate image: In a recently-released ranking of green companies, Newsweek ranked Coca-Cola Enterprises number 1 in the food and beverage sector, and number 36 overall. And Bellevue's plant is considered by the company to be a model for good recycling practices.
John Brock, the CEO of Atlanta-based Coca-Cola Enterprises, will be broadcasting from the Bellevue plant because it's the first facility to reach a 99.9 percent recycling rate, said Sacha Monpere, public relations coordinator for Coca-Cola Enterprises -- the world's largest marketer, producer and distributor of Coca-Cola products. "They recycle nearly everything," said Monpere -- from the plastic strapping that goes around the products to the paper on back of a name tag. The plant, which employs about 500 people, does on-site composting, and is also one of Seattle's largest users of hybrid electric delivery trucks.
Later in the day, Brock plans to do some trail maintenance work on Mercer Slough, and give the city a $5,000 check for continued refurbishing and maintenance of the trail.
