Bellevue Philharmonic serenades Russia, France in '09-10
Posted by Nicole Tsong
The Bellevue Philharmonic's 2008-2009 season was marked by canceled concerts, a dip in donations and internal bickering that had supporters wondering if the orchestra would even be around for another season.
But the orchestra survived intact, and with new interim music and executive directors in place, has announced a scaled-back season that includes Brahms and Rimsky-Korsakov symphonies and the traditional Handel's "Messiah" for the holidays.
The announced 2009-2010 season includes:
- Masterworks I: Russian Fairytales, Nov. 7-8, Meydenbauer. Program includes: Selections from Khachaturian's "Gayane Ballet," Shostakovich's Concerto for Cello No. 1, Op. 107 and Rimsky-Korsakov's "Scheherazade." Soloist: Amos Yang, cello.
- Masterworks II: Das Romantics, Jan. 16-17, Meydenbauer. Program includes: Brahms' Symphony No. 4, Sibelius' Concerto for Violin, Op. 47 and selections from "Romeo and Juliet, Suite No.1" from Prokofiev. Soloist: Elisa Barston, violin.
- Masterworks III: A Little Taste of France, April 17-18, Meydenbauer. Program includes: Saint-Saëns' Danse Bacchanale from “Samson and Delilah," Bizet's "L'Arlesienne Suite No. 2," Saint-Saëns' Concerto for Piano No. 2, Op. 22, and Shostakovich's Symphony No. 9. Soloist: Mark Salman, piano.
- Handel's Messiah with Bellevue Chamber Chorus, directed by Dr. Fred Lokken, Dec. 20, Westminster Chapel, 13646 N.E. 24th St., Bellevue.
- Pops concert: Destination Springtime, March 20-21, Meydenbauer. Includes works by Dvorak, Gershwin, Lloyd Webber, J. Strauss, Lowe, Anderson and more
