Testing quieter pavement on I-405 in Bellevue; weekend lane closures
Posted by Nicole Tsong
The state Department of Transportation is closing all but one lane of northbound I-405 and some ramps in Bellevue this weekend to install and test quieter pavement.
Northbound I-405 will have just one lane open between 112th Avenue Southeast and Northeast Sixth Street from 5 a.m. Saturday to 5 a.m. Monday, the department said.
Ramp closures include the carpool off-ramp from northbound I-405 at Northeast Sixth Street on Saturday, but the ramp will reopen Sunday. On Sunday, closures include the on-ramp from Coal Creek Parkway to northbound I-405, and the off-ramps to east and westbound I-90 and off-ramps to Southeast Eighth Street, all from northbound I-405.
After some other quieter pavement test sections proved to be just as noisy as standard asphalt six months later, the transportation department is trying some new methods, including paving during warmer periods, laying the quieter asphalt over concrete and changing up the pavement mix, the department said.
In other quiet pavement news, did you know that the transportation department has an acoustics expert who drives around with microphones on his tires? Check out this KING-TV report.
