Red-light cameras coming soon to Bellevue
Posted by Katherine Long
Better start paying more attention to the traffic lights around Bellevue. The city is kicking off a red-light camera program at the end of this month with two cameras in two different school zones, but the city is not yet ready to say where those cameras will be installed.
Earlier this year, police said they were considering placing cameras at intersections on major streets including Northeast Eighth Street, Bel-Red Road and 148th Avenue Northeast. The schools mentioned included Stevenson, Lake Hills and Sunset elementary schools.
Bellevue Officer Carla Iafrate said city police wrote 299 tickets for running a red light in the first six months of this year. Last year, the city issued 727 tickets to red-light runners for the entire year, including 467 for the first six months.
Red light cameras have proven to be controversial among some drivers. In a public hearing last year, residents who opposed the plan said it was a money grab and not proven to make the city safer. And in King County Superior Court last month, a group filed a class-action lawsuit against two camera companies and 20 cities, including Bellevue, saying the cities entered into illegal profit-making deals with camera manufacturers.
Last year, Belleuve Police Chief Linda Pillo said the red-light cameras often have a "halo effect," cutting down on red-light violations across the city, because drivers forget where the cameras are installed and are generally more cautious.
