Beach update: Juanita likely to close for weekend
Update: The city of Kirkland has now officially closed the beach, until further notice. Updates will be posted on the city's Web site, or you can call the city's24-hour hotline at 425-587-3860.
King County is advising the city of Kirkland to close Juanita Beach this weekend because of a high bacterial count, according to Dean Wilson, a senior water quality planner for the county.
Wilson said the high count could becoming from surface-water runoff from rainfall, or from the winds we had earlier in the week, which pushed dirty water into the cove. Because of Juanita's position on the lake, "any crud in the lake ends up in Juanita Bay," he said.
All the rest of King County's beaches will be open for swimming this weekend, including Bellevue's Meydenbauer Bay and Newcastle beach parks.
One other beach note: If you see a lot of small dead fish floating around in the water or on shore, don't be alarmed. They're sticklebacks, a type of fish that breeds in the lake during this time of year. After spawning, most sticklebacks then die. It's part of the natural cycle of life and death on the lake, and not a cause for concern, Wilson said.
