'Smokestack Arias' premieres at ACT Feb. 2

Way back in 1916, Everett had an "occupy" moment of its own: Members of the International Workers of the World (aka the "Wobblies") wanted to organize in the city and support striking shingle-mill workers, but they were denied use of the local "free speech" corner and were rounded up and subjected to horrific beatings. When a boatload returned a few days later, on what is now known as Bloody Sunday, they were met by armed deputies; the resulting gunbattle killed two deputies and five Wobblies. Local musicians Wayne Horvitz and Robin Holcomb have constructed "Smokestack Arias," a "song cycle" around the labor uprising and subsequent violence, whose sentiments are not unfamiliar themes today. It starts Thursday night at ACT.
