Centralia soprano wins Beverly Sills Artist Award
Soprano Angela Meade, born and raised in Centralia and now seen often at the Metropolitan Opera, has been named the winner of the $50,000 Beverly Sills Artist Award. Meade, 34, made her Met debut as Elvira in Verdi's "Ernani" four years ago and will appear again in the role on Thursday in a new run of the opera, the New York Times announced. Meade made a big impression in October, when she took the title role in the Met's "Anna Bolena" after superstar Anna Netrebko finished a run of seven sold-out shows. (Review here.) Seattle audiences saw her in June 2011 when she performed at Gerard Schwarz's farewell concert. Meade was marked early for success: she was a winner of the Met's Northwest Regional auditions in Seattle in 2007.
