Mount Si's Brielle Buhner, whose father Jay starred for the Mariners, has overcome five knee surgeries. Finally healthy, she has become one of the area's top softball players.

Mike Roy's life changed forever when the Kentwood High School athlete found his mother, Krissy, dead in 2008.

Brian Sinclair, Lake Washington javelin thrower

In August 2007, Brian Sinclair discovered that his father, Tom, was having a seizure and called for help, saving Tom's life. After recovering, Tom returned to throwing javelin and inspired Brian to take up the sport.




Ashley Aven, Meadowdale softball player

Ashley Aven, 18, was diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia in July 2009. If not for her health complications, Ashley would be playing softball for Meadowdale. Her father, Bill Aven, talks about being a "cancer dad."
