Pillars of the Beacon Hill community

Inside the new 50-million-gallon, underground Beacon Hill reservoir, people get ready for Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels' news conference on Wednesday amid 624 2-foot-wide supporting columns that are about 30 feet high. The $39.6 million reservoir provides greater security for drinking water, and it creates a 26-acre addition to Jefferson Park on top. The reservoir project, expected to be finished in a few weeks, will be followed by a one-year, $8 million reconstruction of Jefferson Park.
