Top leaders for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints issued a letter that was read to every California congregation, urging church members to support Proposition 8. The previous version of this story was more general and could have incorrectly left readers with the impression that the Mormon church's letter was read to every LDS congregation in California and beyond. A previous version of this story incorrectly stated that Jefferson County commissioners must study whether it makes economic sense for the county to form its own electricity company, but it's actually public-utility district commissioners who will study the issue. The story also originally referred to the state's 23 municipally owned utilities but should have identified them as 23 public-utility districts. Seattle City Light is not one of them; it is a municipal utility. Twenty-three public utility districts provide electricity in Washington, serving more than a quarter of the state's population.
